Starpack Awards 2019: The Unpacking Asthma Challenge

Owlstone Medical® is proud to support the “Unpacking Asthma” Challenge for school students, part of the Student and Schools Starpack Awards 2019.
Reducing Anxiety of Asthma Treatment in Infants
The “Unpacking Asthma” Challenge is developed by The University of Cambridge in conjunction with the NHS. The goal of this challenge is for the school students to develop a packaging solution that helps reduce the anxiety of children under 6 who are having asthma treatment for the first time. The solution not only needs to contain all the items needed for asthma treatment, but also needs to do it in a way that is fun and engaging for the child.
Anxiety faced by infants is problematic for the effective treatment of asthma, and therefore if this anxiety can be reduced, it will in turn aid compliance and therefore potentially lower many of the preventable factors that lead to attacks and hospital admissions.
One of the previous year’s winning designs is already in the process of being piloted in an NHS hospital.
Information for Students and Teachers
Now in their 18th year, the awards organized by the Institute of Materials Minerals and Mining (IOM3) challenge students from a wide range of courses, some with a graphics emphasis and others concerned with structural/product design, as well as those from materials/technology courses, to submit solutions to problems. This year’s briefs include environmental issues and new technology.
The Awards are open to pupils and students currently studying at Key Stage 4, GCSE’s, AS/A2, BTEC Levels 2/3 and NCFE programmes aiming to help students understand the work going into packaging and the vital role it plays in the consumer market. Briefs this year address packaging waste and healthy eating, among others.
The briefs for both schools and students are available online with the deadline for online registration on Friday 29 March 2019.
