Engineering Technician
The Engineering Technician will play a key role across all Owlstone’s Product Lines by providing hands-on support, maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting for our various product ranges. The role involves working under minimal supervision, supporting the development of our products within strict safety, regulatory, and performance specifications.

The Engineering Technician will play a key role across all Owlstone’s Product Lines by providing hands-on support, maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting for our various product ranges. The role involves working under minimal supervision, supporting the development of our products within strict safety, regulatory, and performance specifications.
Responsibilities (Key Tasks/Accountability)
1. Systems Development, Maintenance & Support
- Build, operate and maintain Owlstone’s trace chemical detection systems.
- Performing testing routines (A to B), analysis, and reporting of results to Engineering Team.
- Troubleshoot, debug, and repair complex electronic and electro-mechanical systems to the component level, including sensor arrays, ion sources, pneumatics and control electronics.
- Running commissioning and calibration processes.
2. Other General Support
- Building/assembly/manufacture of test-jigs.
- Conduct acceptance testing and commissioning of new products/equipment.
- Calibrate and validate instruments.
- Component inspection / IQC (use of microscope/inspection techniques).
3. Quality & Safety Compliance
- Operate within the accredited Quality Management System (e.g., ISO9001, ISO 13485 for medical devices).
- Adhere to strict safety standards (EHS) regarding chemical exposure, hazardous materials, and electrical safety.
- Investigate equipment failures and contribute to resolutions.
4. Documentation & Technical Collaboration
- Understand and interpret Technical Drawings and electronic schematics
- Maintain accurate technical records/reports of equipment history, maintenance, and repairs.
- Provide technical/user documentation (SOP/WI) for assembly, commissioning and calibration processes in alignment with the QMS
- Liaise with relevant internal stakeholders, and external customers regarding equipment technical issues.
Person Specification
Education and Training
HNC/HND or equivalent in Electronic Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or Chemical Engineering.
Experience
Proven experience of providing support to Engineering in a high-technology laboratory.
De-bug and repair of PCBs’ – Working knowledge of schematics, use of multi-meter to fault-find to component level, soldering skills, cable preparation.
Hands-on experience of machine shop equipment (Lathe, pillar drill, hand-tools)
CAD/Solidworks experience desirable
Knowledge and Skills
Technical: Able to de-bug and repair PCB’s. Ability to fault find to component level within complex systems.
Software Proficiency: Proficiency in using PC-based diagnostic tools and equipment software.
Dexterity: High level of dexterity for working with fine tools and delicate, high-sensitivity instruments.
Focused: Able to perform repetitive tasks within the relevant protocols (Safety, accuracy etc)
